Saint Anthony
of Lisbon/Padua was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1195. He became an Augustinian monk
at the age of 15 and 10 years later joined the Franciscan order. In 1227, he became
the administrator of a group of monasteries for this order. He taught theology in
the large cities of Italy and France and he also preached in those areas, especially in
the vicinity of Padua, Italy. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in the year after
his death and in 1246, he was named the Doctor of the Church. Anthony is the patron
saint of Portugal and of Padua and he is also the saint invoked for the finding of lost
articles. His feast day is June 13. St. Anthony's Parish in Lowell, MA celebrates the feast of our patron, St. Anthony, every year in the month of June. |
